Today's prompt/topic/thought-provoking concept - Recent Mail from a Loved One
{Mine is not so recent...but it is about a time in my life when letters meant SO much to me.}
GO.
It's Saturday.
Mail Day.
I am 16, growing up in the bright, sunny, balmy, tropical island of Haiti.
Yet, I am far from my family...far from my friends....far from my crush :)
Each week, I painstakingly make lists of those whom I have written to, prioritizing those who write me back. Like Santa, I make my list and check it twice.
I sit and I write each one, thinking of their personalities, answering their questions.
And then Saturday comes.....
...and I wonder, "Will they write me back?"
In the hustle and bustle of the American life, will they remember their friend? The little missionary kid in Haiti...longing to be connected to my "other" home so many miles away.
Then the plane arrives. The packages are unloaded. The mail is sorted. And I SEE the "Brumbley" pile.
There are no e-mails at 16.....just beautiful precious letters....letters from family...from friends....from home.
And I hear my mom say......
And my heart sings!!
STOP.

A handwritten letter is so priceless, even in a world of internet! I just saw your profile pic. Is that from Moyo? I recognize the painting on the face. Looks just like my daughter's face after we went there. That buffet was amazing!
How I remember so well!!! You were a faithful letter writer!! Even then, you were practicing to become the prolific writer you are today. I love you!!
Lindsey, I was sixteen when we moved here to the USA (far from missionaries, though) so I know exactly what you mean. There was no e-mail then either (we must be around the same age) but I would wait for my then-boyfriend's letter each week. It was my only connection to "home." The feeling is incomparable, isn't it? You've got mail! Music to your ears.
@Jen YES! It IS Moyo! Good eye, Jen! It was my birthday so they offered to do the face painting, and I am ALL about the FULL experience! :) :) Where did you guys sit? We sat down in the basement -- very cool and swanky! :)
@Beverly - Thanks, Mom! I knew that this would bring back lots of memories for you, too!
@Gaby SO TRUE! It WAS long before Skype, Facebook, Blogging, and even e-mailing....those letters were like a lifeline to my teenage heart!! Thanks for sharing your own experience! I love knowing that people "get it" when I write a post.
thanks, your quick thought brought back loads of memories of mail that surprised me and delighted me
This post brought back memories. I wrote so many letters throughout middle school and high school...to friends, near and far.
It was a different world back then...without facebook, twitter, texting, even e-mail.
(I like it better today). (It's so much easier to stay connected with people).

Aww! I am so glad! Those are great memories, right?
@Stephanie Oh yes! That was such a big deal back then! I think that is why our "generation" like social networking SO MUCH. It brings our friends, family, and new friends to our finger tips!!
yes indeed
I love mail and they are treasures especially in this tech world we live in. This post brought back memories when my husband (then boyfriend) corresponded through letter writing when we first met. No facebook, no blogs, no text, just the anticipation and excitement of holding a loved ones words in my hand was all that mattered...and still does. BTW, I'm following you now and thanks for linking up such great posts for all of us on NOBH! God bless!
@Tracy
It is SO funny how quickly life has changed and technology puts people at your fingertips. I miss "real" letters, but I think my love for the instant connections makes up for it!
